Rajat Sharma was born to his parents on 18th February 1957 in Sabzi Mandi where he lived along with his parents and 6 brothers and 1 sister in a small house with an area of 100 square feet. They did not have access to basic facilities in those days like running water and electricity.
Rajat attended Sanatan Dharm Middle School from 1963-1971 and still remembers those days when he used to study underneath the street light at Sabzi Mandi railway station. Rajat Sharma was good at studies and knew quite well that only studies could help him overcome his situation of poverty.
Rajat Sharma joined Ramjas School in 1971-1974 and walked every day to his school.
He enrolled at Shri Ram College of Commerce in the year 1974 to earn his Bachelor’s, he carried on with his higher education to complete his Mcom. It was none other but former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who helped Rajat Sharma in numerous ways in his college days. Ever since they met each other they have developed a strong bond over the years.
He spent 11 unforgettable and tough months in Tihar jail during Indira Gandhi’s emergency in 1975. After he got out of jail his interest in politics grew even more.

After completing his MCom he was employed as a researcher by Janardan Thakur, who had just left his job with Ananda Bazar Patrika to begin a fresh alliance. Rajat, later on, went to join Onlooker Magazine in 1982 as a trainee where he wrote his very first story, a fortnightly magazine for which he was paid Rs 300.
He worked with Onlooker Magazine for 2 years. In 1984 he was promoted to Chief of Bureau and to Editor in 1985 and continued to give his best till 1987. His promotion raised questions about his age.
In 1987 he joined as an editor at Sunday Observer for 2 years. He kept on getting better and better by joining popular companies. In 1992 he got employment with The Daily where he gave his best for a term of 3 years.
A breakthrough came for Rajat when he met Zee TV during a flight to Delhi Subhash Chandra where they came up with an interesting idea of setting up Aap Ki Adalat where popular and big names came to the show.
Its first show was aired on March 14, 1993, with Lalu Yadav, followed by the second episode with Khushwant Singh, which in turn was followed up with another popular personality Kapil Dev.
He was in the position of President of the Delhi Cricket Association board but soon resigned after one month seeing the corruption within and the numerous pressures.
