Neeraj Chopra Career
Early Days of Training
Neeraj paid a visit to Panipat Sports Academy, where javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary recognised his hidden talent of throwing the javelin to 40 metres without any training. This inspired Jaiveer to become Neeraj’s first coach. Neeraj developed skills in sports from his coach and his fellow companions who were also training under Jaiveer.
After getting trained by his first coach he participated in a district-level championship and won his first bronze medal. He made up his mind to continue his training further to improve his skills at throwing the javelin so he motivated his family to let him stay in Panipat to hone his skills.
Spending a year with Jaiveer, Chopra went to Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Panchkula. At that time this was the only institute which had a synthetic runway. Mr Naseem Ahmad lined him up for a long-distance run as well as a javelin throw. Though Panchkula had a synthetic running surface it lacked a specialized coach. This didn’t upset Neeraj and his colleague, they approached the internet and started watching videos of other professional javelin throwers like Jan Zelezny who appeared as a champion in Czech. They watched his videos and tried to put them into practice.
He joined the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer in 2016 and he was determined to take his game to new heights while serving the nation.
Neeraj stay at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex improved his javelin throw and he managed to reach a distance of 55 metres. In the junior athletics championship held in Lucknow on 27th October 2012, he improved his throwing reach from 55 metres to 68.40 metres which was a new national record in which he won a gold medal.

Neeraj began his training in 2011 and since then his progress improved over the passing years. He started playing in 2016 and today he is a well-known sports personality in India and across the world. He created history by becoming the only Indian in a track and field event by winning a gold medal in the 2020 Olympics. After Abhinav Bindra, he is the second person to achieve this feat and he is now a member of the gold club.
